Letting Go

winter

In our yoga practice we are constantly reminded of the importance of letting go. Whether it is to sink a little deeper into our asanas or to let go of the thoughts that may be circulating around in our head.

In nature we see that during Autumn the trees let go of the leaves to accommodate for the Winter and prepare for new growth and life in the Spring. It is natural to feel withdrawn and introspective during the cooler months of Winter. It is a time of respite and regeneration.

We can take this philosophy into our yoga practice by choosing asanas that allow us the space to feel on a deeper level how each pose effects us personally. Where are we holding tension in the body? What is the emotional connection behind the tension? What do we need to do to let go and move forward?

Poses and Activities to try…

Balasana – Child’s Pose

Pascimottanasana – Forward Bend

Salamba Sarvangasana – Shoulder Stand

Supta Baddha Konasana – Reclining Bound Angle Pose

Viparita Karani – Legs Up The Wall Pose

Candle Meditation

Journalling

Sun Worshipping 🙂

Hot Chai and Honey

Bend and stretch in tune with the natural rhythms of life. Go easy.. If you need a little warmth in your yoga practice, start with Surya Namaskar (Sun Salutation) and perhaps even a little Kapalabhati Pranayama (Breath of Fire).

At all times honour where you are right now in your yoga practice. If you have to force yourself to get up and do sets of asanas then it probably isn’t the right thing for you at the moment. You may simply need to rest, meditate or sleep a little more than usual. This is all completely in sync with the energies of Winter. I wish you much peace, love and joy as you take time to reflect on the beauty that is You!

namaste..
